This was perhaps one of the most fascinating and USEFUL classes I have ever taken. I will have completed my requirements for my master's degree after this class. I did not need this class for my program, however, I needed to take 2 courses in order to receive financial assistance. I, unlike many students, could pretty much choose any class I wanted to take just for the heck of it. I saw this course posted in the summer offerings and thought it I might learn something that would be of use to me as an educator and a business major. This course definitely did not disappoint. As a matter of fact, I have taken away much, much more from this class than I could have ever dreamed.
To answer the professors questions:
What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
All of them!! I have taken more notes and printed off more material than I will know what to do with. I can not wait to return to school this fall so that I can share what I have learned with others. I am seriously considering asking if I could present some workshops during the Staff Development Days to teach my peers what I have learned.
2. How has this course assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
This course has assisted and affected my lifelong learning goals in a BIG way. The course has assisted me by making me more knowledgeable about the various forms of technology at our fingertips. I always thought I was a pretty computer savvy individual until I took this class and realized there is so much more out there for me to learn. Some of the information presented I had heard about, but had never used. Honestly, I thought it would be more difficult to learn, so I never even tried. The course affected my lifelong learning goals by wetting my appetite to learn more. I will now keep my eyes open for conferences, workshops, presentations, ANYTHING to teach me more about web 2.0 and the fantastic technology at our fingertips. I can't help but think, "if I've learned this much in this short of a time, what else is there I don't even know about?" I will search to find out and learn!
3. Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this course that surprised you?
Take-aways, as stated earlier, was all the information and material presented. Every single bit of it was informative and will be useful for years to come. The only unexpected outcome I can think of, is that I never in a million years thought that by choosing this class, I would learn so much that could be used every day as an individual or as an educator. When reading the course description, I thought it would be useful and interesting. However, it definitely well-exceeded my expectations and I am more than thrilled with the outcome.
4. What could we do differently to improve upon this course’s format or concept?
I do not see where this course needs to be improved upon at all. My only thought was that I wished I had taken it during a normal semester, instead of during the shorter summer semester. I would have loved more time to have some of the other web 2.0 tools in education (video and photo sharing, podcasting, presentation sharing, etc.) be their own module and learn how to use each and every one of them.
5. If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?
GUARANTEED!! Not only would I jump at the chance to participate, but I would encourage friends, family and colleagues to join and participate as well. I will never be able to say enough good things about this course, the material presented, the instructor and the others I have had the pleasure of conversing and learning with.
Thank you so VERY much Dr. Yang for providing us with your knowledge and expertise. Even though I have completed the requirements necessary for my master's degree, I hope I have the pleasure of participating in another class with you someday. You are awesome!!
This blog will provide individuals with various sites that will help them teach career education, or help individuals prepare to enter the workforce.

Interviewing Tips
http://www.careercc.com/interv3.shtml#Well
Career Consulting Corner is a company that sells resources for preparing indivdiuals for the world of work. This particular page will provide job seekers with interviewing tips, questions they may be asked at a job interview and questions they should be prepared to ask their interviewer.
I have purchased numerous items from Career Consulting Corner and am amazed at their attention to detail and their ease of use of all their products. I used this page so many times throughout my classes, that I recreated it for my website and as a handout to give to the students when preparing for our mock interviews and inclusion in their portfolio for future use.

Ethics in the Workplace
http://www.goodcharacter.com/NFS/SchoolToWork.html
This site will provide educators with an introduction to a video series, "Not for Sale - Ethics in the Workplace". As you scroll down through the site, you will be able to "read" a video story about a workplace scenario (to the right) and in the box to the left of the scenario, are questions for discussion with your students.
This was a great introduction piece and led me to convince my district to purchase the program. The acting is a little cheesy and the kids tend to make fun of some of the obvious situations, however, the overall theme about what is right and wrong is excellent. Again, this is a great introduction if money is tight, otherwise, purchase the whole curriculum for questions, videos and worksheets.

Youth Rules!
http://www.youthrules.gov
This site is designed to information teens, their parents, employers and educators about the rules that govern the employment of minors. Each section provides users with the hours and jobs teens are allowed to do, along with tips and suggestions for preventing workplace hazards.
I use this site frequently with my students and I direct parents here on a regular basis when they have a question about the laws of working teens. The teen section provides students with links to download posters and stickers, and the kids love that!

Hot Jobs!
http://www.hotjobs.yahoo.com
Yes, another job search service. However, in today's economy, if you are looking, best to get your name out there anyway that you can. Similar to the other engines, this one provides you with the ability to create cover letters, resumes, and search jobs. You can also ask questions to career advice experts and participate in online polls. The career tools provide you with interviewing techniques, a salary calculator to negotiate your salary and tips about life at work.
Very much like monster.com and careerbuilder.com. I also noticed that there is a place for an employer to sign in and search out possible candidates by looking at their resumes or post jobs.

Career Builder
http://www.careerbuilder.com
Very similar to monster.com, this site provides users with the ability to create and post resumes, seek career advice, and search for jobs.
One of the features I particularly liked about this site, is that I can provide some basic information about the careers I would be interested in, along with my email address, and they will send me an email when a job that matches my description comes available.

Monster

This site provides users with the ability to create and post cover letters and resumes. In addition, there is a link that allows users to search for jobs, saved their job search history and keep track of where they have applied. Clicking on the career tools will provide individuals with wizards for creating their resume and cover letter and other professional letters and personality and career assessment tools.
This site is becoming increasingly popular for people who are looking for jobs, especially in a wider range than their local newspaper can provide. I have used it for the job searching aspect, but have been a little leary about posting my resume or other information.

NYS Department of Labor
http://www.labor.ny.gov/home
This site is maintained by the state of New York and is another great resource for students, parents, educators and those looking to enter or re-enter the workforce. The site provides links with information about the current minimum wage laws, permitted occupations and working hours for teens, and protecting ourselves on the worksite.
I enjoy this website very much. I have pulled so much information to use in my classroom, particularly with the safety and health aspects of teens working. I also particularly like the publications link. NYS provides numerous pamphlets, posters, handouts, etc. for educators, parents and students and so far all the ones I have gotten were free of charge.

Occupational Outlook Handbook
http://www.bls.gov/oco/
Excellent resource for individuals of any age to research careers. There are literally thousands of job titles provided and each one provides the nature of the work, education and training necessary, expected salary, job projections, etc.
The only downfall I have found with this site is that there are so many career postings, it can be quite overwhelming. At times, I have had to help a student do some searching to find their chosen career. The titles we use, are not necessarily the titles used by the Department of Labor.

Career Zone

This site is an excellent resource for students who are researching careers, educators who are teaching youth about the various careers out there and counselors who are helping students plan their futures. There are several online tools to help students match their interests and abilities to careers, research their chosen career and plan for their future.
This is a FANTASTIC site! I use it every year and New York State has been great about maintaining its accuracy. It has recently undergone major changes to make it more appealing and easier to use.

Teaching Kids Business
http://teachingkidsbusiness.com
This is an excellent site for introducing kids of all ages to the world of business. There are several aspects to this site from games, to creating resumes, online store and yes, of course, blogs!!
I particularly liked the ease of use of this site. Not only are there links to the different pages, but each page provides its own links to additional sites/pages related to that topic. I also appreciated the "how to use our site" link.
